About the Summit

About the Summit

Since 2019, the Ikorodu Division Youth Summit has been providing a forum for young people to come together, network, learn new things, and share their hopes and concerns in a public setting. At Ikorodu Division Youth Initiative, we see young people addressing the issues they care most about and that often affect them most directly. This might be in their learning environment, neighborhoods, serving organizations and communities. We believe in the power of youth-adult partnerships. Ikorodu Division Youth Summit plays an important role in “creating the space” and engaging youths in planning, implementation, and followup. Committed to building assets, working with young people means not only asking young people about their experiences, but figuring out ways to work together with young people to improve the communities in which they live!

At the Summit, all participants (young and old) are both learners and teachers, having every opportunity to share their experience and ideas, ask questions, and get connected to like-minded individuals. By the end of the event, we want young people (and adults) to be excited and ready to make a difference in their communities.

“YOUTH CATALYSTS:
FUELING CHANGE THROUGH DEVELOPMENTAL ASSETS”

Developmental Assets are critical, positive experiences and qualities essential for raising successful young people, identified by the Search Institute. These assets are divided into:

External Assets: These are the positive experiences and supports young people receive from family, school, community, and youth organizations, including support, empowerment, boundaries and expectations, and constructive use of time.

Internal Assets: These reflect positive internal growth and development, including commitment to learning, positive values, social competencies, and positive identity.

Research has shown that the presence of these assets during adolescence significantly influences young people's decisions, helping them become responsible and caring adults. Increased exposure to these assets correlates with positive behavior and reduced engagement in risky activities.
